Nothing Common In This Quarter

What is it that you always say to yourself after taking a less than relaxing vacation? "I'm going to need a vacation from my vacation!?" 

Now you can take a trip to the southern coast every day, and never leave the heart of East Cobb.  From the innovators at Local Three, Muss and Turner's, and Eleanor's ~ diners can now rest and relax in the casual atmosphere of their new restaurant, "Common Quarter."

"I grew up around St. Simons on the Coast of Georgia, so I wanted to share a little piece of my history with the community," says Chris Tally, one of the partners at Common Quarter.  

Tally tells us the concept behind CQ is a Southern Coast & Farm to Table approach that will honor locally and regionally sourced seasonal products. "From the Mid-Atlantic coast of Virginia down around to the gulf coast of Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas and then on in to all those farms... southern food is just the best... and we want to pull inspiration from all of it!"

Our experience walking through the doors of "Common Quarter" was a mix of sleek modern elegance, coastal culture, and down home comfort. For both of us it's always more than just the food and beverages being served, it's the overall experience.

The difference with "Common Quarter" and other fine dining spots in the area is the feeling of family and history that this new spot has already cultivated. There is a sense of place here and every element of design at CQ seemingly has a sentimental story behind it. From the beautiful Italian marble of the bar, the map of coastal Georgia on the wall, to the gorgeous hand made "harmonica" family-style dining table... every single element serves a purpose.  Ask Tally yourself and he will be happy to grab a seat, share a drink, and tell you all about it! 

Some of the details may only ever be discovered by those patrons who become CQ's regulars ~ but if you happen to find "Greg" ~ please let us know!  Also, be on the lookout for the Guns and Roses, the rocking chairs, and our favorite "Ocean Waves."

For all you East Cobbers needing a wine fix, CQ will have 15 reds and 15 whites available by the glass, along with a small selection cocktails with a "southern spin".  Hops happily gives two-thumbs up on the craft beer selection.

Plans for the future include live music on the patio, low-country boils served at the community table, and much more... all of it geared toward adding to CQ's mission of creating a casual place to relax and wash away the work week. 

We have a feeling that "Common" will give "Seed Kitchen and Bar" a run for it's money in the expanding East Cobb dining scene.  How much are we willing to bet on that? How about a Quarter!

It’s Pumpkin Treason! Other Beers for Fall!

I love pumpkin.  I really do.  I’ll even order a pumpkin spice latte during the heart of summer.  And I love pumpkin beer.   I obsessively buy bottles every year to compare and contrast the pumpkiny nuances of each brewer’s fall masterpiece.  I even push my love for pumpkin beer on others.  Dogfish Head Punkin Ale was the main beer available at my wedding last fall.  But, there are times (even in the fall…. *gasp*), when I just want something ELSE.

It’s blasphemy.  It’s pumpkin treason.  It’s probably the reason that the Great Pumpkin still hasn’t shown up in Linus’s most sincere pumpkin patch.  And yet, here we are.  We’re not quite to the porters and stouts of winter.  Almost everyone is well versed in the many Octoberfest beers.  But I know many of you are still thirsty for more.
So if you, like me, need to switch it up once in a while, here are some OTHER beer styles that you can expand into that really are perfect for fall.

Sour / Wild Ale – This quickly growing category of sours is my latest beer obsession and it pairs perfectly with many of the other flavors that appear during this season.  If you are new to this taste category, start with a beer that has a lot of sour cherry background such as the Petrus Aged Red or the Duchesse De Bourgogne before branching off into the harder to find, and significantly more sour, pale varieties such as the Cantillons, the Russian Rivers, or the one offs from Allagash.

Abt / Quadrupel / Quad – Many of the beers that often fall into the “best beer in the world” lists fit into this beer style category.  With their extremely malty taste, distinctive high alcohol content and thus lingering alcohol notes such as bourbon or whiskey, and a characteristic lack of hops to the nose, these beers can make you crave a chilly fall evening and a fire pit.  Luckily, many of these beers are available just about everywhere, including St. Bernardus Abt 12, Rochefort Trappistes 10, and Ommegang Three Philosophers, just to name a few.

Belgian Strong Ale – The Belgian Strong Ale can be quite the tricky beer style.  Pour one of these and you can get a high hop flavor and a pale color, and then open the next and find a very low hop flavor and a dark brown hue.  I suggest moving towards the darker side of the spectrum as fall moves in and many are actually labeled as Belgian Strong Dark Ale to help guide your way.  Again, the alcohol content is on the higher side for these, which helps warm your palette as the evenings grow cooler.  Many within this style have a wonderfully spicy background reminiscent of a perfect crock pot meal.  An excellent example of this style is Brother Thelonious by North Coast Brewing Company.  Also widely available are Chimay Blue by Bieres de Chimay and Trois Pistoles by Unibroue.

Of course this is just the beginning of the fall beer adventures you can go on.  Throw in an Extra Special / Strong Bitter (ESB), a Dark Wheat Ale, and a Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy and you’ll have a non-pumpkin fall tasting you won’t soon forget.

First Taste of Common Quarter

On Sunday, September 1st, Common Quarter will take over the Muss & Turner's kitchen!

This will be the first chance for the public to taste the wares that will be featured at our newest restaurant venture, opening in East Cobb in the (very) near future!.

Chris Talley will be on hand, along with Chef Aaron Crane and the rest of the Common Quarter management team. Plus, rumor has it that the "three bozos" will all be in the house, so you just know it's going to be a party.

SOHO at Vinings Jubilee August Events!

Every Sunday in August, from 5:30 to 9:30 pm, SOHO at Vinings Jubilee will host an All-American Lobster Boil. For $28.00, each guest receives Maine lobster (1.5 lbs.), Andouille sausage, corn on the cob, red bliss potatoes and a green salad. Reservations are recommended. Lobsters are limited, so those reservations placed by Friday by 5:00 pm for Sunday dinner will be assured their lobster.

Of course, SOHO is still hosting flight night every Wednesday as well! This August, the wines and flavors of Oregon will be showcased.

A Scoop of Frozen Pints Craft Beer at Taco Mac

Liquor Infused Maple Syrup

Deep in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, Maple Farms stands among towering old-growth Red and Sugar Maple trees that produce some of the finest, all-natural maple syrup in the world.

They have also mixed it up a bit and threw in some underground favorites like Eastside and New Deal Distilling from Portland, Oregon. The syrup is barrel aged for four to six months in climate controlled temperatures to draw out all the natural flavors locked deep inside the oak. Then it is bottled in ornate, swing-top glass flasks, triple sealed and wax dipped to keep all those delicious flavors inside.

Vine and Tap to Open in Buckhead

Ian & Susan Mendelsohn announce their plans to open "Vine & Tap" in the Lenox Village shopping center located on Lenox Road in Buckhead.  The wine bar, set to open mid-July, will offer a variety of wines to appeal to every palate, local and regional craft bottled and tap beers, and Mediterranean-inspired small plates.

While living in New York, Ian Mendelsohn was sommelier at Windows on the World followed by five years of running the wine department at Christie’s Auction House. In 2004, Ian moved to Las Vegas to open the Wynn Hotel and then served as Wine Director of the Mirage Hotel and Casino. Ian moved to Atlanta in 2010 to take over as Beverage Director of the St. Regis Buckhead. Mr. Mendelsohn is also one of a very small number of people in the state of Georgia who have passed the Diploma examination of the Wine and Spirits Trust.

Mendelsohn states that Vine & Tap will feature wines from family owned wineries that strive to be good stewards of the land, work with as minimal intervention as possible, and make wines that represent the history and standards of the grape or region. “The mark-ups on the wine will be among the lowest in the city,” Mendelsohn claims. “We want guests to enjoy great wine, not stare at it on a wall.  It will be by the bottle or by the glass, and we will have four on tap.”

The menu – conceived and directed by Zeb Stevenson, chef of The Livingston and a friend of the Mendelsohns -  will be comprised of assorted cheeses, charcuterie, salads, oysters, panninis, bruschetta, small bites and desserts. Vine & Tap plans to serve lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday and will be closed on Sundays.

Tequila Tasting Room to Open in Decatur

Located at 314 East Howard Avenue, MAR, a new restaurant and tequila tasting room, will offer Atlanta fresh, simple and authentic fare from coastal Mexico. Created by international restaurateur, Humberto Bermudez, MAR delivers a dining experience unlike any other. An innovative menu, completed by executive Chef Joey Zelinka, offers an array of flavorful dishes, which include wood roasted fish and meats, coastal tacos and tostadas, cebiche, oysters and more. In addition to a range of premium seafood dishes, MAR offers an extensive tequila list, Spanish wines and sangria, as well as coastal specialty drinks such as mojitos, margaritas and micheladas.
